Ear Microsuction
Blocked or muffled ears can be really frustrating. Microsuction is a gentle, modern way to clear excess earwax, with no water involved, performed by a trained professional.

About Ear Microsuction
Earwax is natural and protects your ears, and usually clears by itself. Sometimes it builds up, causing symptoms such as hearing loss, earache, a blocked feeling, tinnitus or dizziness.
In microsuction, the clinician looks into your ear and uses a small, gentle suction device to remove wax. It is a dry method, so it can suit people who cannot have ear irrigation. It is usually painless, though some people notice a short, loud suction noise.

Before & after your visit
How to prepare
- Put 2 to 3 drops of olive or almond oil in the ear for 5 to 7 days beforehand to soften wax, unless advised otherwise
- Let us know if you wear hearing aids
- Tell us about any ear infections, surgery or perforations in the past
Aftercare & what to expect
- Slight dizziness or a temporary ringing can happen straight afterwards and usually settles quickly
- Keep ears dry for 24 hours if advised
- Never use cotton buds, fingers or ear candles. They can push wax deeper or cause harm
Frequently asked questions
Does microsuction hurt?
It is normally painless. You may hear a loud suction noise, and occasionally ears are sensitive. Tell the clinician if you are uncomfortable.
How is it different from syringing?
Microsuction is dry and uses controlled suction under direct view. Syringing (irrigation) uses water and is not suitable for everyone.
How often can I have it done?
Only when you have symptoms or build-up. Ears are self-cleaning, so most people do not need regular treatment.
How can I prevent wax build-up?
Earwax cannot be prevented, but regular use of olive oil drops can soften it. Avoid cotton buds.
